The Experience of Experimental Cinema; The Unseen Festival: September 1 – 30

September 19th, 2018

Ever since entering the Film Studies program at CU Boulder, I have become privy to how complex and marvelous cinema is. It has also made me realize that film has more to offer than what is commercially popular. There are hundreds upon hundreds of brilliant films which go unrecognized, mostly owing to lack of exposure. However, there are programs which strive to remedy this. One of these is the Unseen Festival, which will take place in Boulder and Denver over a thirty-day period. The Unseen Festival is focused mostly on experimental films, many of which are not shown elsewhere. In attempting to... Read More

Why Do We Still Hate the Raiders?

September 18th, 2018
Raider Rivalry

There are three unwritten laws that we live by in Colorado.  Avoid I-70 during peak ski weekends, don’t turn off your sprinkler system just because it snows a little early, and most importantly, always hate the Raiders. The rivalry goes back years, but the epicenter stems from the late seventies when the Oakland matched Kenny Stabler, Cliff Branch, and Fred Biletnikoff against Denver’s Orange Crush defense of Randy Gradishar, Tom Jackson, and Billy Thompson. The games were violent, nasty, physical matchups that often ended with blood on the field, and fights in the stands.  But as the years... Read More

Why? Because They’re Dumb – Local Movie Reviewer Takes on Predator

September 16th, 2018
Predator

On the cinematic Venn diagram, there can be an awful lot of overlap between a great movie and an awesome movie. Before we go too much further, let me stake out what I mean by that. A great movie is one with impressive production design, acting, screenwriting, and direction — essentially all the ingredients have been baked in to give us a film of quality. Apollo 13 is a great movie, as is Monster and Deliverance. An awesome movie, on the other hand? That’s a movie that directly tickles our reptile brain, delivering a thrill, a joke, something purely designed to elicit an immediate response.... Read More

5 Cannabis Brands Sponsoring Athletes

5 Cannabis Brands Sponsoring Athletes

More and more cannabis companies are beginning to see the value of sponsoring athletes. By promoting cannabis as part of a healthy and active lifestyle, it does more than give your brand association with health and fitness. It also helps to disprove the age-old stereotype that people who consume cannabis are lazy, which helps to change the perception of cannabis, and will lead to further legalization. Below I’ve collected five cannabis brands sponsoring athletes that aren’t in any particular order. Each one is a company I feel is supporting athletes and assisting in the overall positive cultural... Read More

Marafiki live on Friday, September 21st

Marafiki

Band interviews are always fun because they give you a peek behind the curtain, literally and figuratively. You get a chance to talk to musicians and see how they feel about their work. You hear about what kinds of things inspire the songs you like, and the process that goes into making them. Recently I was lucky enough to sit down with some of the guys from Marafiki to talk about their progression into the wonderful world of music. Marafiki is a quartet, with Nathan Perkins and Maverick Corley on Guitar, James Medina on percussion, and Wesley Hughes on bass. They all switch off on vocals so there’s... Read More

Speak Your Truth – Never Settle, Stay True to Yourself, and Thrive

September 14th, 2018
Happiness versus settling

Since I moved into my Airstream, I hang out daily at Whole Foods (eating the salad bar and borrowing precious Wi-Fi). As a self-proclaimed blogger (I don’t know how many blogs it takes to clearly own that title), I like to spend most of the time writing. I find that it’s ironically easy for me to focus amongst the lunch crowd chaos. Today, I painfully watched a couple with two kids absolutely annihilate one another with their words. In public. And, my heart was so soft to their experience that I literally wanted to cry. The wife is pushing the two kids in one of those car-shaped shopping carts... Read More

Bites with Blondie – Neighborhood Food Guide: Historic Downtown Littleton

September 14th, 2018
The Alley_Littleton

Growing up in the surrounding suburbs and graduating from Columbine High School, it wasn’t until I was an adult that I learned to appreciate the charm of downtown Littleton.  The one-way streets lined with shops and white strung lights, bring picturesque memories to most locals, myself included. This quaint little town has captivated new businesses to move into the neighborhood, becoming quite the hot spot for foodies. Start your morning off with a fresh roasted cup of coffee (or bottomless Bellini’s) and sample the signature dishes offered at Main Street’s newest addition, Grande Station.... Read More

Buffs Beat Nebraska – The Rest is Gravy

September 11th, 2018
Colorado's big win over Nebraska

In a sea of scarlet, the Colorado Buffaloes renewed their longtime rivalry with the Nebraska Cornhuskers and exited Lincoln with a dramatic 33-28 victory.  Wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. continued his heroic play as his touchdown reception with just over a minute left spoiled the coaching debut of local quarterback legend, Scott Frost. Nebraska dominated the first half with a retro game plan from the early 90’s of running the ball and stout defensive line play, but two early turnovers kept the Buffaloes within range trailing only 21-17 at halftime.  The Buffs made a few adjustments in the... Read More
