Ten Things We Learned Week One of the NFL

September 16th, 2020

In a sports world full of quarantines and opt outs, empty venues and cardboard cutouts, rule changes and daily testing—week one of the NFL season was bound to be a relative unknown. With exhibition games canceled and the media limited, the first week of the NFL would have to serve as a limited sample size in answering many of the questions about the teams around the league, the quarterback carousels, and the sport in general. Here are ten things we learned: The Jacksonville Jaguars are not tanking for Trevor – After shipping players like Jalen Ramsey, Leonard Fournette, and Nick Foles to... Read More

Welcome to Fantasy Island

September 9th, 2020

It has been said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.  But by the end of last season’s Fantasy Football season it seemed as if I had proven the definition to be wrong. Last season I used the same tried and true system that had made me a perennial playoff contender for years, and yet my result were different.  This time I had failed. I always start with a running back in round one of my fantasy draft before aggressively going after a top tight end in round two.  Round three always has me at the quarterback position selecting... Read More

Blowing Bubbles in Class

August 19th, 2020

Ask someone to name their favorite sport and you will find a variety of answers.  The question so subjective that a crack of a bat, smell of fresh cut grass, or even taste of cheese dip may elicit contrasting responses. Ask someone to name the toughest sport and you will find arguments defending the size and speed of the everyday linebacker, the blood and bruises of the MMA fighter, and the toothless grin of the second-line hockey player.  Again subjective. But ask which sport has done the best job returning to play during a pandemic and there looks to be plenty of evidence to judge them objectively. ... Read More

The Typical Atypical Season of Sports

July 15th, 2020

As I headed downstairs to make coffee the other morning, I stared at the empty calendar hanging in the kitchen. The quarantine had turned the days and months irrelevant.  My sports-themed, Drew Litton calendar, usually marked up with family activities, summer road trips, and neighborhood barbeques, hung empty. Past July’s had meant trips to the Coast for days on the beach, small town festivals filled with music and food, and visiting family across the states. The highlight of this summer was watching Hamilton on Disney Plus. It was then that I noticed that, according to my calendar, Tuesday,... Read More

Sports–Too Much Too Soon?

June 24th, 2020

It was only last weekend that I sat on my couch watching some guy named Daniel Berger win the Charles Schwab Challenge in a playoff over some guy named Collin Morikawa.  This wasn’t about the names of the players, the putts being drained, or even the awkward silence of an empty golf course.  This was about hope, normality, and the gradual return of sports. Despite the fear of COVID-19 and the social unrest that has dominated our lives, the golf tournament gave me just a glimmer of hope that our world was finally trending the right direction.  The opening of restaurants, gyms, and businesses... Read More

Colin Kaepernick – Apology Accepted?

June 9th, 2020

Following the tragic death of George Floyd and subsequent protests that have erupted across the country, Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement last week in which he apologized on the behalf of the owners and the league for failing to support the NFL players’ right to protest, specifically referring to those who knelt in protest back in 2016. “We, the NFL, condemn racism and systematic oppression of Black People.  We, the NFL, admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest.  We, the NFL, believe Black Lives Matter.”... Read More

Hockey’s Time to Shine

June 2nd, 2020

As states continue to relax quarantine rules in an effort to open up again, the NHL became the first of the four major sports to step forward with a comprehensive plan to get back on the ice.  The Return to Play Plan was agreed upon in principle last week as the NHL decided on a four phase plan that would include self-isolation, training at local facilities, a training camp, and a 24 team playoff held at two hubs yet to be announced. According to the NHL timeline, players have already been isolating, and some facilities across the country have been opening with specific safety guidelines.  The... Read More

The NFL Schedule – Ten Must-See Games in the First Ten Weeks

May 12th, 2020

The National Football League released its 2020-21 schedule last Thursday, and while the future is unknown with regards to empty stadiums, neutral locations, or whether there will be a season at all, the excitement is still palpable. We all have our opinions when it comes to living in a world with COVID-19, and whether we choose to stay quarantined, go out, or function somewhere in the middle.  The NFL has that choice as well, but I believe there are 16 billion ($) reasons that football will be played on Sundays. The NFL brought in $16 billion in revenue last year, and half of that revenue was... Read More

Grading the Broncos Draft – No Pass/Fail Allowed

April 28th, 2020

The 2020 NFL Draft was a little different this year to say the least.  Players sat at home on modest couches in comfortable clothing waiting for phone to ring. The Commissioner was booed as usual, but via Zoom versus the crazed fans that generally lament him in person. And the regular draft day commercials that often include beer, wings, and Ford F-150’s were replaced by all that is COVID-19. But it was football. The date was circled on my empty calendar weeks before, my life risked many days prior in order to stock up on alcohol, I sat in my favorite chair, wearing my favorite jersey, waiting... Read More

The NFL Draft – And It’s Not a Replay!!!

April 21st, 2020

With apologies to the Johnsonville Cornhole Championships that recently aired on The Ocho, Thursday night marks the return of live, meaningful sporting events.  The NFL Draft will commence as scheduled despite the lack of medical examinations, face-to-face interviews, and private workouts of year’s past.  The Denver Broncos have 10 picks in this year’s draft, including the 15th spot in the first round where many are guessing wide receiver. But unless John Elway gives up some equity and moves up the draft board in order to grab a CeeDee Lamb or Jerry Jeudy, I see an offensive lineman instead,... Read More
