Bracketology: Ten Huge Mistakes

February 28th, 2020

March is around the corner, and with that comes the NCAA Basketball Tournament and the chance of finally winning your office pool.  You’ve watched numerous games, analyzed teams, and narrowed it down to a dozen possibilities and a couple of favorites.  All you need now is your bracket and the matchups. And yet, year after year, your bracket sheet is filled with more bad picks crossed off by black sharpies than good one’s highlighted by, well, a highlighter. Here are ten mistakes to avoid when it’s time to make your picks again this March. Don’t pay attention to the Conference Tournaments.... Read More

Colorado Sports Teams – New Year’s Resolutions

January 3rd, 2020

As we take the empty champagne bottles to the recycling bin and begrudgingly grab our gym bags, deep inside we know the inevitable is just days, or weeks away.  The New Year’s Resolutions we have made to give up drinking, or finally get back in shape, just aren’t sustainable. The general problem is that we tend to make our goals too lofty.  We can renew our gym membership, but our five-days-a-week turns into much less than that, and by the time February comes around our New Year’s Resolution is just a faint memory.  Giving up alcohol seems plausible considering the new year generally begins... Read More

No Date for the Dance

March 19th, 2019

Selection Sunday has come and gone, and the Colorado Buffaloes failed to earn an invite to the 2019 NCAA Basketball Championships.  Proponents argue that the Pac-12 was immensely weak this year, the Buffs strength of schedule was poor, and the team lacked quality wins.  Compound that with a bad loss to Washington State and a limited number of spots, and the snub was more than expected. But I have seven, completely unbiased reasons why the NCAA Selection Committee should have had the Buffs dancing in March. 21 Wins – Colorado finished 21-12. While you can downplay the achievement with a schedule... Read More

TC McCartney–Some Stories Write Themselves

February 5th, 2019

Last week, TC McCartney was named the quarterbacks coach for the Denver Broncos.  Generally, a story about a QB coach doesn’t draw much interest, even in Bronco Country, but this one may change your mind. McCartney was with the San Francisco 49ers last season, and worked under head coach Kyle Shanahan and Denver’s new offensive coordinator, Rich Scangarello, as a lower-level assistant.  McCartney is 29 years old, started in the NFL as a quality control assistant with the Cleveland Browns, and the TC stands for Timothy Chase. Have I piqued your interest yet? Well, maybe it would help to let... Read More

Derrick White – He’s Cooking Now

January 29th, 2019

On the surface, the story of Derrick White is hardly worthy of an ESPN 30 for 30.  A former Colorado Buffalo hoopster gets drafted with the 29th pick in the first round by San Antonio, plays his first year in the G-League trying to improve his game, and twelve months later he’s averaging 25 minutes and 9 points a game for the Spurs and Greg Popovich. Nice, but we’ve heard that story before. But what if I told you that there’s a little more to White’s improbable journey from a kid out of Parker, Colorado, to a spot on an NBA roster? Derrick White entered Legend High School (Parker, CO)... Read More

The Buffs Make it to a Bol Game

December 4th, 2018
bol bol

The Colorado football team may have disappointed with their late season collapse, but that doesn’t have to mean the absence of a Bol game.  A game that features University of Oregon’s Freshman sensation, Bol Bol that is.  While the basketball game doesn’t take place until February 2nd, the hype surrounding Bol is turning into must-see-tv. Listed at 7’3, Bol is averaging 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks a game in what most assume will be a one-and-done season at Oregon.  But if you’re asking whether Bol will be a “project” at the next level, it’s time for a history lesson. Bol’s... Read More

Mike MacIntyre – Change is in the Air: 6 Reasons Why It Was A Mistake To Let Him Go

November 20th, 2018
Mike MacIntyre

The whispers began after the Colorado Buffaloes fell apart in the Oregon State game.  Those same whispers turned to shouts after the Buffs dropped their sixth game in a row, after a 30-7 drubbing by 19th ranked Utah at Folsom Field. Coach Mike MacIntyre was officially let go over the weekend, despite having one game left to possibly save the season.  While it is that time of year in which teams like Kansas go after a Les Miles, and USC ponders the future of Clay Helton, letting go of MacIntyre was premature at best, and here are six reasons why. Expectations – That Oregon State game really... Read More

The Week That Was: A Full Week of Sports in 600 Words

October 16th, 2018
Colorado Rockies

One of the difficulties of trying to write a weekly Colorado sports article is focusing on the biggest story of the week, and timing it within the deadline provided.  Follow that up with the challenge of informing and entertaining the reader in 600 words or less, and the problem becomes compounded.  Within the last ten days the Colorado Rockies had a playoff series, the Denver Broncos played twice, the CU Buffs traveled to USC, the Colorado Avalanche were five games into the start of the hockey season, while the Denver Nuggets were just hours from their NBA opener. And that’s just Colorado! ... Read More

Buffs Beat Nebraska – The Rest is Gravy

September 11th, 2018
Colorado's big win over Nebraska

In a sea of scarlet, the Colorado Buffaloes renewed their longtime rivalry with the Nebraska Cornhuskers and exited Lincoln with a dramatic 33-28 victory.  Wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. continued his heroic play as his touchdown reception with just over a minute left spoiled the coaching debut of local quarterback legend, Scott Frost. Nebraska dominated the first half with a retro game plan from the early 90’s of running the ball and stout defensive line play, but two early turnovers kept the Buffaloes within range trailing only 21-17 at halftime.  The Buffs made a few adjustments in the... Read More

Cheaters Never Win

March 6th, 2018

The Pac 12 finished up basketball’s regular season and the Colorado Buffaloes showed that hard work, cohesiveness, and integrity can get you a long way.  Wait, did I say integrity?  Skip that. With an 8th place finish in the conference (8-10) and an overall record of 16-14, Colorado will not be one of the 64 teams invited to the NCAA tournament, will probably not be sent an invite to the NIT, but will finish the season knowing that they did things the right way, remembering the adage that cheaters never win. Well, almost never. It’s true that the Arizona Wildcats won the conference even though... Read More
