Big Hearted

March 11th, 2018

We need Fred Rogers these days, or someone very much like him. If you’re a younger reader, you can be forgiven for not knowing his work, since he’s more of a contemporary for those of us of a certain age. But his refreshing lack of cynicism is a warm and safe hug, something that effortlessly passes beyond a single generation. Rogers was the creator and star of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, a children’s program that ran for decades on public television. During each half hour episode, there were puppet shows, tours of factories and experiments, and Rogers himself. He would simply and honestly... Read More

Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox

March 10th, 2018

I was immediately intrigued by the name; Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox. It has a nice ring to it. Billed as a “gastrobrothel,” this place has a little bit of everything. Good food, good drinks, live music and nostalgia. There’s even a hostel upstairs. You walk through a tall wooden door off of 20th street and enter into the main barroom. The décor is unique to say the least. It has a kind of classy retro vibe. There’s a small lounge area with some sofas and tables. The wallpaper has intricate velvet designs reminiscent of the 70’s. Decorative golden orbs hang from the ceiling. Some of... Read More

Low Fat vs. Low Carb – Which Diet Works?

March 8th, 2018

It’s almost spring and many Americans start to think about dumping the winter plump in preparation for summer.  With that in mind, consider some recent information comparing dieting techniques and their success at helping you lose a few. Some dieters firmly believe in avoiding fat and while others espouse avoiding carbs. Does it matter? In a recent study at Stanford University researchers put more than 600 overweight adults on either a healthy low-fat or low-carb diet. It turns out, participants had similar levels of weight loss success on each plan. That’s right!  Both diets were successful. The... Read More

March into Denver’s Lighthouse

March 8th, 2018

If you’re involved in the Denver literary scene whatsoever, whether as a reader or writer, you’ve likely heard of Lighthouse before. This non-profit is run out of a two-story home just off of Colfax Avenue. It has the antique, homey feel of the area, and the ornate ceilings, light fixtures and furniture give the ambiance of being welcomed into a well-to-do writer’s home (though nobody actually lives here). Lighthouse hosts a number of free public events, readings, writer’s workshops, and offers membership perks such as writer’s hours, workshop discounts, and exclusive events. I can proclaim... Read More

Brunch Never Tasted So Good

March 7th, 2018

Finding a delicious southern style brunch spot can be tricky in Denver, unless you know where to look. Right off of South University Blvd next to the DU campus sits the gem called Four Friends Kitchen. Started by (you guessed it) four friends, this family friendly neighborhood spot has mouth watering breakfast options you need to try before you die. From grits that are cooked all night, to hot and fresh beignets, you can tell that this restaurant knows what it’s doing when it comes to southern comfort food. As I walked into the restaurant, I was immediately drawn to the beautifully decorated... Read More

Penny Spectacular

March 6th, 2018

I’ve lived as a female for decades now, yet mastery of feminine wiles still eludes me. Take makeup. I’m not good at it. When appearing as myself, I err on the side of “nothing” rather than make an error of burlesque proportions. When appearing in burlesque, it sometimes looks like I’ve applied bronzer with a trowel. Kim Kardashian would weep. I’d weep, too, but that would send my smeary eyeliner coursing down my poorly-contoured cheeks. Early on in my burlesque days, a producer sent me a painfully kind email requesting that I “do something” about my eyeliner and lipstick. My skill... Read More

Cheaters Never Win

March 6th, 2018

The Pac 12 finished up basketball’s regular season and the Colorado Buffaloes showed that hard work, cohesiveness, and integrity can get you a long way.  Wait, did I say integrity?  Skip that. With an 8th place finish in the conference (8-10) and an overall record of 16-14, Colorado will not be one of the 64 teams invited to the NCAA tournament, will probably not be sent an invite to the NIT, but will finish the season knowing that they did things the right way, remembering the adage that cheaters never win. Well, almost never. It’s true that the Arizona Wildcats won the conference even though... Read More

The Ultimate Beer and Pretzels Game

March 4th, 2018

Has there been any movie genre more maligned recently than the studio comedy? Back in the day, movies with Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and others were guaranteed to open to enormous business. They would stick around for quite a while and, if you didn’t like the looks of a particular one, no big deal. Another comedy would open soon. Things changed, and there’s a ruthlessly unfunny reason for that. Major studios don’t think regionally or nationally any longer, they think globally. Movie attendance in America has been steadily dropping, but attendance is huge elsewhere. The most profitable... Read More

Cannabis Miles for Charity

March 3rd, 2018

With 11 races scheduled this year, including an 8 person Ragnar Relay over 2 days, the MJFITNUT Team will be logging in some serious miles. Each one of those miles spent training and competing will be fueled by cannabis. Does this mean cannabis flower and concentrates, or edibles and topicals? All of the above. Does it also mean hemp seeds, hemp protein powders, and other hemp food products? You bet it does. These routines are that of a cannabis athlete, and the miles cannabis athletes put in could be called cannabis miles. MJFITNUT has committed to donate their cannabis miles to charity, and you... Read More
