The NBA All-Thanksgiving Team

November 22nd, 2019

In celebration of the Denver Nuggets hot start and with next week being Thanksgiving, I’ve decided to name my 2019 NBA All-Thanksgiving Team.  Apologies to Aaron, Justin (both on the Pacers), and Jrue Holiday (Pelicans), who were just too obvious to make the cut, but there’s always next year. Nikola Jokic – Denver Nuggets The big man makes the All-Thanksgiving squad because he loves to dish, is lousy at stuffing, and often gets burnt on the defensive end. Dragan Bender – Milwaukee Bucks   I don’t know about you, but every Thanksgiving I tend to go on a Bender, and for the rest of... Read More

The Thanksgiving Play

November 19th, 2019

I went to see The Thanksgiving Play at the Curious Theatre this past week and I’m having a hard time writing about it. Not because it wasn’t well-produced (it was) or beautifully played (it was indeed), but because I walked out of the venue feeling like yet another clueless white person who should probably just shut up for a while. That’s a weird thing to write and it makes the play seems like kind of a downer, which it both totally is and completely isn’t. It was simultaneously both one of the most uncomfortable and one of the funniest things I’ve seen in 2019. The premise is this: the... Read More

Eat The Rich

November 17th, 2019

“Someday, even the experts will figure out, that crime is not caused by rap music…or even my music, but by a power structure of self-absorbed property owners so brain dead and stupid they won’t even see that if you’re too goddamn greedy to pay taxes for schools and services, they’re not going to be any good anymore! And that uneducated time bombs are a very poor investment as a future workforce. And if you go on teaching people that life is cheap, and leave them to rot in ghettos and jails, they may one day feel justified in coming back to rob and kill you. Duh!” Jello... Read More

Gabrielle Shannon

November 16th, 2019

Gabrielle Shannon was fortunate to have grown up in New York in a very artistic environment. She started her early art training at The Art Students’ League in New York, followed by Grove Arts in California and SVA in New York. In 1994, she co-founded Urban Desires, the first online art and culture magazine. Urban Desires was widely acclaimed worldwide and allowed her to explore and influence art in its many forms. During this time, Shannon exhibited and curated at New York galleries including The Elga Wimmer Gallery, Thompson Street Gallery, and The Manhattan Children’s Museum. She... Read More

Wasteland Hop, The Dollhouse Thieves, and Solsatellite at Lost Lake Lounge

November 16th, 2019

Lost Lake Lounge is a laid back, no frills bar on the beautiful and historic East Colfax Avenue. It’s a local favorite for good reason, and an awesome place to get a drink or see some live music. They host a variety of local and touring acts from pretty much every genre except karaoke. Next Friday, the 22nd, Lost Lake welcomes Wasteland Hop, The Dollhouse Thieves, and Solsatellite. All of these bands are made up of genre bending pioneers, bearded poets turned rappers, and musical magicians that play all of the instruments in Rockley’s and some of the ones they have to special order... Read More

3 Places to Grab Bottomless Brunch this Weekend in Denver

November 15th, 2019

In my experience, the only way to really do brunch is to devote the day to an all-out bottomless brunch. Brunch is already amazing, and then add in bottomless mimosas? Count me in. Bottomless brunch also ends up being much more cost-effective too- why pay $7 for one mimosa when you can pay $13 for several? Check out these spots for a great bottomless brunch this weekend: you’re welcome.   Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox Ophelia’s is a premier place to go for anything, especially brunch. Not only is the decor and atmosphere fun and eclectic, a lot due to its history of being a brothel... Read More

Blow it for Burrow—Tank for Tua—Hurl for Herbert

November 15th, 2019

In a battle against the Cleveland Browns two weeks ago, the Denver Broncos (3-6) won the game but lost ground in the race to secure a top pick in next year’s NFL Draft.  But with a rookie quarterback and facing a difficult remaining schedule, look for Denver to battle it out with the Miami Dolphins, Cincinnati Bengals, and others at the bottom of the league for the potential top prize. Whether Denver goes winless the rest of the season and manages to secure the top pick or wins a game or two and finishes with a top-ten selection, here is how Denver’s draft will go, no matter where they land. First... Read More

7 Things You Should Do During Your First Week in a New City

November 14th, 2019

When you’re staring down piles of boxes after arriving in a new city, it’s hard to know where to start. Before worrying about furniture placement and interior decorating, there are a few important tasks you need to take care of. Here’s what you should knock off your to-do list during the first week in a new home. 1. Unpack the Essentials During the first day in your new home, focus on unpacking the essentials. Children’s bedrooms should come first, followed by beds for the rest of the family, linens for a hot shower after your long day, and kitchen supplies. You might rely on take-out... Read More

Escape from Godot

November 11th, 2019

The Denver Film Festival unleashes its craziness all over the mile-high metropolis this fortnight. I had the pleasure of attending the arguably least-film segment of the entire event, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t worth my time. It definitely was. In fact, you could say it was “worth the wait.” The event that I’m talking about is “Escape from Godot,” which is just about exactly what it sounds like. The classic, curmudgeonly piece by Samuel Beckett (“Waiting for Godot,” for those who live in the present and don’t waste their time on post-War philosophical struggles) showcases... Read More

This Franchise is Terminated

November 10th, 2019

Sometimes it feels like franchises never end. There’s a bunch of films in the Fast and Furious series, the James Bond movies have been trucking along since 1962, and the MCU will end at roughly the same time that our sun goes supernova and wipes out all human life on our fragile planet. But franchises end. Consider the little-remembered Francis the Talking Mule series. Based on a 1946 novel, seven films were made during the 1950s about a mule in the Army that could talk. Presumably, they were profitable—for a while, anyway. As time went on, audiences either a) searched for new diversions in... Read More
