As teams report to spring training, tension in the Rockies organization has reached an all-time high.  Rumors are flying around that All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado is unhappy with the direction of the ball club, and the treatment he is getting from General Manager Jeff Bridich, who has apparently offered up Arenado in multiple trade discussions. The year was 1996 and my first as a Denver Broncos season ticket holder.  The seats were located in the south stands at the old Mile High Stadium, where thousands of us sandwiched ourselves on the cold, uncomfortable benches of yesteryear.  The south stands lacked arm rests, seat backs, cup holders, and the appropriate amount of restrooms, but the seats were a mere $20 a piece and with little-to-no need for security at that time, we could bring in as much blankets, beer, and food as we wanted.  Life was good, as was the team. The tragic event that occurred last Sunday morning in Calabasas, California has been well documented as former Los Angeles Laker great Kobe Bryant (41), his daughter Gianna (13), and seven others were killed when their helicopter crashed on the way to an early morning event. The NBA honored the 5-time Champion with tributes from around the league, fans poured to the Staples Center to leave flowers and signs, and chants of Kobe were heard in venues across the globe. As the final votes were tallied for this year’s Hall-of-Fame and the results confirmed, only two major league baseball players would be going to Cooperstown: New York Yankee great Derek Jeter and Colorado’s own Larry Walker. Both could be called a surprise. The selection of Derek Jeter in his first year of eligibility wasn’t too shocking considering his 20-year career as a Yankee in which he appeared in 14 All-Star games, won five gold-gloves, and won five World Series. As we take the empty champagne bottles to the recycling bin and begrudgingly grab our gym bags, deep inside we know the inevitable is just days, or weeks away.  The New Year’s Resolutions we have made to give up drinking, or finally get back in shape, just aren’t sustainable. Historically speaking, it was always easy to look at the Denver Broncos and describe who they were as an organization. As the perennial Super Bowl contenders, they had Hall-of-Fame quarterbacks, tenacious defenses, veteran leadership, and great minds and stability in coaching and the front office.
