Abend Gallery has announced the latest iteration of one of its most popular recurring exhibitions, the 5×5 Project. It started four years ago with a simple idea: a mini show, with small scale paintings done on unframed 5×5 inch panels. Over the years, the idea blossomed into a showcase of epic proportions, with an ever-expanding collection of works. This year’s event features more than 75 participating artists and encompasses a dizzying array of genres, subjects, and techniques. It’s also a big year for debuts at Abend as they welcome 20 new artists. The 5×5 Project invites... Read More

Art of the State

March 23rd, 2019

The Art of the State is an expansive series covering as much of the Colorado art scene as possible. This isn’t a normal exhibition; it’s a full scale immersion. Open to all Colorado artists and every type of media, this is an incredibly diverse event that attracts hundreds of artists. It takes place at the spacious Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities. Home to three separate galleries and over 10,000 square feet of exhibition space, the Arvada Center is one of the few venues in the Denver area large enough for a collection of this magnitude. This event always draws some big names... Read More

GEORGIA

March 16th, 2019

I love this city. The music, the art, the scenery, the people; it’s all top notch. One of the greatest things about Denver is the DIY community. It takes a special kind of person to pour their heart and soul, not to mention blood, sweat, and tears, into a project to benefit others. It takes a special kind of community to nurture these projects and help them thrive. Denver is an ideal in both of these aspects. We’ve had more than our fair share of legendary underground music venues, but now we have a slightly different DIY gem. The soon-to-be-all-the-rage garage gallery, GEORGIA. You... Read More

Processus

March 9th, 2019

Processus is a gallery/studio located in the heart of RiNo. Since 2014, they’ve been providing a co-working space for printmaking, photography, woodworking, sculpting, and digital arts. Founders and resident artists Christopher Perez and Viviane Le Courtois sought to build a place where people could come to learn, experiment, and create. It’s part studio, part classroom, and part gallery. They offer a wide range of classes and all the tools and studio space needed for whatever you’re working on. A community studio is a huge advantage to up-and-coming artists. Instead of renting... Read More

Millers and Rossi

January 26th, 2019

Millers and Rossi is a contemporary art gallery in the RiNo art district. They show a wide range of works spanning a variety of media. Representing mostly locals, their artist list is small but resounding. Each and every artist represented is exceptional. Art isn’t the only thing Millers and Rossi has to offer, however. It’s also a speakeasy with an awesome bar in the back. An art gallery with a bar? Take my money! I was a little concerned at first that the gallery might be more of a side note to the speakeasy aspect. This was not the case. The gallery holds its own. They have a diverse... Read More

Jakie Says Hello, Vincent Xeus

Just outside Larimer Square, sits Gallery 1261. Located at 1412 Wazee Street, it shares a space with K Contemporary and Abend Gallery, forming a colorful, cultural trifecta. Founder and artist Quang Ho envisioned a venue focused on creativity over marketability. Since 2004 they’ve been a place for artists to showcase their latest conceptions in a wide variety of mediums and styles. The gallery is spacious, with hardwood floors, redbrick walls, and plenty of large windows providing natural lighting. The pieces displayed are mostly paintings and small sculptures. They feature landscapes, portraits,... Read More

Inside the Kirkland Museum of Fine and Decorative Art

October 27th, 2018
the energy of explosions

The Kirkland Museum began as a way to honor the late Vance Kirkland. As an artist and philanthropist, Kirkland was influential to many in the art community. After his passing, family friend Hugh Grant became executor of his estate and founded the museum in his memory. The original location opened on Pearl Street in 2003 sharing a building with Vance Kirkland’s studio and art school. In 2014 they moved to a new location on 12th and Bannock, with the studio and school following shortly after. The museum specializes in fine and decorative arts with an emphasis on Colorado artists. They have over... Read More

On the EDGE

October 27th, 2017

Edge Gallery is a small yet fascinating gallery in the 40 West Arts District just west of downtown Denver in Lakewood. Edge displays work by artists working in various mediums. There were artists working in silk dying and coloring, an interesting number with what appeared to be a wedding dress on display and decorated with objects which I assume held some sort of significance for the artist, Wynne Reynolds, abstract paintings, and other mixed media projects. The thing that stands in my mind about Edge Gallery is its welcoming and friendly atmosphere; everyone seemed to be having a good time and... Read More
