Meet Someone IRL

January 23rd, 2018

The statistics speak for themselves – scientists at the Pew Research Center say 88% of singles meet their mate in real life, not online.  In fact, only 5% of couples say they met online.  This means if you are only looking for love online, your chances of meeting someone special are pretty low. We don’t live in a society that supports meeting our mates the way our parents did.  Many Americans don’t go to church or have other traditional social networks.  Working adults don’t have access to as many singles as college aged kids.  Add to that our obsession with our phones and we simply... Read More

Ooh La La Presents

January 23rd, 2018

Denver is a great town for variety. The geography of the Great Plains rams up into the Rocky Mountains in a cacophony of disorderly foothills and stunning shelves of red rock. This geographic jolt seems to inform the city itself, as it vacillates between high culture such as the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and a decidedly underground scene of edgy shows in unpolished venues. I love them both and everything in between! Speaking of unpolished venues…one of my favorite shows happens at 3 Kings Tavern on South Broadway every monday night. Denver’s longest-running burlesque troupe,... Read More

The Introduction of Gary Harris

January 23rd, 2018

Google the name Gary Harris and you are likely to find a Real Estate Lawyer, a Healthcare Specialist, or a Dental Recruiter before you land on the 6’4 shooting guard that stars for the Denver Nuggets.  Selected by the Chicago Bulls with the 19th overall pick in the 2014 draft, Harris was promptly traded to Denver (along with the rights to Jusuf Nurkic) for Doug McDermott and a journeyman bench player named Anthony Randolph.  Harris wasn’t exactly a “throw in” on the draft day deal, but with a Denver roster that already included five shooting guards, his role was uncertain at best.  The... Read More

11 Awesome DU Clubs You’ve Probably Never Heard Of

January 22nd, 2018

College is such the opportune time for personal growth and exploration, with young students investing their energy in finding the right path of study, in the friend group that makes them feel most fulfilled, and in paving the first trail toward independence and adulthood. Yet students often, unfortunately, overlook Student Organizations on campus. These inexpensive groups offer a way to meet others with like-minded interest, to indulge in an enjoyable craft, and to network within the pulse of Denver. And no, I’m not talking Chess Club. DU has a vast array of weird and awesome clubs at your disposal... Read More

Irritating Toast

January 21st, 2018

Everything ends. Sometimes it’s unplanned. Look at Terry Pratchett, the prolific English author. He wrote dozens of novels and gained a worldwide following due to his piercing intellect and cutting wit. He should have lived longer, written more, but on March 12, 2015, Alzheimer’s disease snuffed out his mighty brain at age 66.* Other times endings are planned. On June 20, 2017, Daniel Day-Lewis announced his retirement from acting. In an interview with W magazine, the 60-year-old icon explained that the making of his final film, Phantom Thread, left him “overwhelmed with sadness.” That... Read More

Hiking in Conifer

January 20th, 2018

Sometimes you just need to unwind and get away from the hustle of the city. While Golden and Boulder are beautiful spots for hiking, they can be a bit crowded, especially on weekends. If you’re hoping to avoid the crowds, Conifer has plenty to offer and will leave you feeling refreshed. It’s only 30 minutes from Denver and boasts several parks to choose from, but my favorites are Meyer Ranch, Flying J, and Staunton State Park. Meyer Ranch is right off of 285. Pay attention, though: the sign for the exit is only about 20 feet before the turn and it’s easy to miss. Once inside the park, you’ll... Read More

Proud To Be a NORML Athlete!

January 20th, 2018

If you’re a cannabis advocate, you know of NORML. For anyone who doesn’t, NORML is the National Organization For the Reform of Marijuana Laws. Their “mission is to move public opinion sufficiently to legalize the responsible use of marijuana by adults, and to serve as an advocate for consumers to assure they have access to high quality marijuana that is safe, convenient and affordable”.  Although NORML as a group is widely known, less people are aware of NORML Athletics. I’m going to change that, and you can help! I’m very excited to announce that both Heather and I are now official... Read More

A Lesser-Known Coloradan Poet: Becoming Familiar with an Unsung Master

January 18th, 2018

How does a poet become a household name? This age-old question has no straightforward answer, though the oversimplified non-answer is: most don’t. The entirety of high schoolers’ exposure to poetry is too often spent on a few of the Romantics, differentiating between Shakespearean and Petrarchan sonnets, and tha-tha-tha-tha-tha-that’s all folks. Our literary canon is not known for its exhaustiveness nor its inclusion, and the vast majority carry on unaware of the full extent of its forgetfulness. Luckily enough, there are the few passionate, hard-working scholars who refuse to let some of... Read More

Delayed Gratification:  The Key to Successful Weight Loss?

January 18th, 2018

The Stanford marshmallow experiment was a series of studies on delayed gratification in the late 1960s and early 1970s led by psychologist Walter Mischel, then a professor at Stanford University. In these studies, a child was offered a choice between one small reward provided immediately or two small rewards if they waited for a short period-approximately 15 minutes.  In follow-up studies, the researchers found that children who were able to wait longer for the preferred rewards tended to have better life outcomes, such as educational achievement and body mass index. While the original study was... Read More

Sassafras: A Brunch to Remember

January 17th, 2018

When you think of Denver in relation to food, naturally the first things that come to mind are steak and potatoes right? Well, as true as that statement may be, one restaurant in particular has rivaled a Colorado staple with its American southern charm. I’m talking about the ever famous restaurant, Sassafras. Biscuits and gravy, shrimp po’ boys, bbq mac n’ cheese, and an endless cocktail menu are just a few of the mouth-watering menu items at this homey and hearty establishment. Walking down E. Colfax on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, I decided to stop into Sassafras for some... Read More
