Ten Things We Learned Week One of the NFL

September 16th, 2020

In a sports world full of quarantines and opt outs, empty venues and cardboard cutouts, rule changes and daily testing—week one of the NFL season was bound to be a relative unknown. With exhibition games canceled and the media limited, the first week of the NFL would have to serve as a limited sample size in answering many of the questions about the teams around the league, the quarterback carousels, and the sport in general. Here are ten things we learned: The Jacksonville Jaguars are not tanking for Trevor – After shipping players like Jalen Ramsey, Leonard Fournette, and Nick Foles to... Read More

The Best Golf Match Ever?

May 27th, 2020

The rain continued throughout the day, but I didn’t care.  There were no outdoor hikes planned, no bike rides with poor fitting masks, and no social distance BBQs through the fencing of my backyard. For most, the combination of bad weather and the restrictions due to quarantine would make a Sunday over Memorial Day weekend feel like Ground Hog Day instead.  Another day of laundry, puzzles, and Netflix. But this day was different. On Sunday at 1pm, I curled up on my favorite chair and watched five straight hours of The Match – Champions for Charity, a live charity golf match that featured... Read More

The NFL Schedule – Ten Must-See Games in the First Ten Weeks

May 12th, 2020

The National Football League released its 2020-21 schedule last Thursday, and while the future is unknown with regards to empty stadiums, neutral locations, or whether there will be a season at all, the excitement is still palpable. We all have our opinions when it comes to living in a world with COVID-19, and whether we choose to stay quarantined, go out, or function somewhere in the middle.  The NFL has that choice as well, but I believe there are 16 billion ($) reasons that football will be played on Sundays. The NFL brought in $16 billion in revenue last year, and half of that revenue was... Read More

Tom Brady to Denver – It Could Happen

January 10th, 2020

When it was announced that Tom Brady would become an unrestricted free-agent on March 18th, you could hear the collective giggles. After all, we’ve seen this show before. Brady will use his free-agent leverage to make sure the roster is set with Super Bowl talent, the offensive coordinator is to his liking, and then he’ll sign the contract and get back to work. At 41 years-of-age, is Brady looking to guarantee his final contract so he can play until he’s 45? Maybe.  After years of giving New England a hometown discount, is Brady finally asking to be rewarded with the highest salary in the... Read More

Elway’s Broncos – Three Years from Now

November 1st, 2019

It’s hard to predict the future, but after losing to the Indianapolis Colts and losing quarterback Joe Flacco to injury, the 2-6 Denver Broncos appear to be in familiar territory: a sputtering offense, questions at quarterback, a coaching staff without answers, and another season of disappointment.  General manager John Elway still insists that the team is built for winning now and is not interested in a rebuild. That’s always nice to hear, but with four straight losing seasons and not much of a game plan, the bigger question is what Denver will look like three years from now when Elway’s... Read More

Empower Field at Mile High? – 20 Better Suggestions

September 13th, 2019

Just recently, the Denver Broncos announced the new name for their football stadium.  From here on out, the stadium which was once deemed Sports Authority Field by many, and Mile High by most, will now be called Empower Field at Mile High, after a Financial Services company from Greenwood Village wrote a big check for the naming rights. Naming Rights for a stadium in Colorado isn’t as easy as people think.  What comes to mind when you think of Colorado?  What players or ownership deserve recognition?  Who will pay big money?  And what do the fans really want? I came up with twenty suggestions... Read More

Ten Big Reasons Why We Whiffed on Drew Lock

May 7th, 2019

Let’s start with two undeniable facts: the Broncos are in dire need of a quarterback for the future, and I personally have nothing against Drew Lock.  That being said,  John Elway’s selection of the Missouri quarterback in the second round, with the 42nd overall pick, was awful on so many levels.  Or ten levels to be more precise. NOT EVERY DRAFT IS A GREAT ONE FOR QBs – The only two quarterbacks taken in the first round back in 2007 were JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn. EJ Manual was the lone QB selected in 2013, and the headliners of the 2014 draft were Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel. ... Read More

SparkNotes for Fantasy Football

Spark notes for Fantasy Football

The official start of the NFL season is in a few weeks, which means the office will be consumed with fantasy football.  For most of us, we welcome the two-hour staff meetings that discuss roster numbers rather than sales numbers, but sadly, many workers simply don’t have the time, or care enough, to join the office league. Like playing golf with the sales team, or after work drinks with management, the failure to join a league can leave one feeling ostracized in the corporate world.  So here is your cheat sheet, your SparkNotes.  PPR league, Standard, Snake…don’t worry about the verbiage,... Read More

Thou Protest Too Much

May 28th, 2018

Last week the NFL owners approved a national anthem policy that would require all players to stand and show respect for the flag.  The policy, which was passed without discussion from the NFL Players Association, would allow players to stay in the locker room during the playing of the anthem if they wished not to participate.  Whether the move was a response to lower ratings based on the taking-a- knee protests, political pressure from fans and the Trump administration, or simply a poorly constructed compromise, the ball is now in the players court.  First Amendment rights aside, if the players... Read More

NFL QB Rankings – Broncos 27th Out of 32

May 15th, 2018

After signing Case Keenum to a two-year contract and passing on a quarterback in the draft, how do the Broncos compare to the other 31 teams at the quarterback position for the next few years.  The ranking below.       Green Bay – They have Aaron Rodgers, enough said. New England – Tom Brady stars as Benjamin Button. New Orleans – Drew Brees signed a two-year extension worth $50 million, the Saints are fine. Seattle – Russel Wilson is only 29 years-old, has gone to four Pro-Bowls, and has already won a ring.  They’re good. Detroit – The franchise has issues, but Matthew... Read More
