Introducing: The Copper Children

July 9th, 2019

The Copper Children is a folk band from Denver that specializes in trippy music and videos, blending what they call “psychedelic rock into a moving performance.” The Copper Children formed in 2015 and released their first album What We Are, in 2016. Their upcoming album, Speaking in Spirits, will also be released soon. The Copper Children have made a shift in their sound with the newest album, and the band was pleased to hear that their Denver fanbase would be sticking by them, the same way that the band has stuck together over the years. In an interview with Westword, the band stated: It’s... Read More

Ravi Zupa Releases New Print, “Buraq and Mahakala”

April 1st, 2019

Continuing his exploration of spiritual and mythical characters from cultures across the world, Ravi Zupa has released the third print in his Tattoo series featuring Buraq from the Islamic tradition and a buddhist version of Mahakala. At the top, we see Mahakala—a fierce, chaotic form of Shiva (husband of Kali) who plays a significant role in Tibetan Buddhism. Like his wife, he is a symbol of time and thus is bound by no rules or structures of morality comprehensible by the human mind. “Facing Mahakala is the most alarming and frightening event in the life of any consciousness,” Zupa says... Read More

Founder and artist Quang Ho envisioned a venue focused on creativity over marketability. Since 2004 they’ve been a place for artists to showcase their latest conceptions in a wide variety of mediums and styles. The gallery is spacious, with hardwood floors, redbrick walls, and plenty of large windows providing natural lighting. The pieces displayed are mostly paintings and small sculptures. M'eye Heart Imagines, Lisa Luree

Valkarie Gallery is the brainchild of Valerie Savarie and Karrie York. It was initially imagined as a space to create and show the work of artists like themselves back in 2013. Over the last five years it’s grown into an artist owned and run collective that showcases emerging and established artists from a wide variety of backgrounds. The collective itself includes watercolor artists, jewelers, paper cut artists, book sculptors, graphic designers and photographers. Incredulous, Cymon Padilla

Leon Gallery is a fantastic place to be immersed in a sea of creativity. Located in a historic building off of 17th and Park Avenue, they host solo and group exhibitions from incredibly creative, innovative minds. Most galleries operate on commission, but Leon has chosen the non-profit approach. This allows them to incorporate a wider variety of artists with much more freedom of expression. For owners Eric Dallimore and Eric Nord, this is much more than just an exhibition space. It’s a staging area for community involvement and social change. They work to reduce stigmas around social issues,... Read More

Helene Strebel's: "Window Fascade"

The Santa Fe Art District is always buzzing with excitement. The galleries open their doors and release  a cascade of color, culture, and expression into the streets of Denver. It’s the perfect atmosphere for local artists to experiment with new ideas and collaborate with one another. Sync Gallery, at 931 Santa Fe Drive, is a prime example of this. It began as an artist collective nearly a decade ago. Its members sought to create a space where they could be represented while maintaining their freedom of expression. The Kirkland Museum began as a way to honor the late Vance Kirkland. As an artist and philanthropist, Kirkland was influential to many in the art community. After his passing, family friend Hugh Grant became executor of his estate and founded the museum in his memory. The original location opened on Pearl Street in 2003 sharing a building with Vance Kirkland’s studio and art school. In 2014 they moved to a new location on 12th and Bannock, with the studio and school following shortly after. The museum specializes in fine and decorative arts with an emphasis on Colorado artists. An Interview with Artist Lauren E. Anthony

March 31st, 2018

I’ve always loved looking at paintings and wondering what was going on in the artist’s mind. What kind of message they wanted to convey. Sometimes it’s simple. A park, some trees, lovely day. But when you get into abstract art, it gets a little trickier. It’s definitely an acquired taste. I personally enjoy the room for interpretation. It gives the viewer a small sense of participation in the beauty. I feel like I connect more with something that takes some time to interpret. This week I had the opportunity to talk to local artist Lauren E. Anthony, who specializes in abstract styles. JH:... Read More
