The Fire Inside

June 11th, 2018
Mindful Monday

Deep within the core of each of us lies our life force…our internal fire. At times, it burns with varying degrees of intensity, but it’s ever present. Just as each of us is unique and individually gifted, the constitution of our fire is dynamically different. The passion and intensity from one won’t always resonate with another but that doesn’t make it any less significant. If we were all driven by the same things, our world would lack the diversity, creativity, ingenuity, and grandeur that make it the beautiful melting pot it is. Tremendous ability lies within each member of our tribe... Read More

The Atrocity Exhibition

June 10th, 2018
Hereditary

When Rick* and his wife Lisa checked the voicemail, there was nothing, only silence. Rick thought nothing of it, until getting a phone call later from his father-in-law. He said to Lisa, “I want you to talk to your mother.” Her mother had slurred speech, and she had no idea what day it was. They rushed over, and took Lisa’s mother to the ER. The tentative diagnosis was that she’d had a stroke. While she recovered, Rick and Lisa took it upon themselves to clean up their parents’ home. They found evidence of sizable hoarding. A couch covered with junkmail. Stacks of VHS tapes. Empty bottles,... Read More

Hemp History Week

This weekend, the cannabis community is wrapping up Hemp History Week. What started as a movement to raise awareness and support for industrial hemp has quickly turned into the largest national grassroots effort to restore strong support for industrial hemp farming in the United States. Running June 4-10, this is the 9th annual campaign which brings together “grassroots organizers, leading hemp product manufactures, farmers, and advocates from all walks of life who are working to change federal policy on industrial hemp in the US.” Hemp has so many uses that it’s not only healthy for you,... Read More

Faces of Denver: Marie Litton

June 8th, 2018
Marie Litton

One of the women who have captivated the Colorado music scene since she was eight years old is Marie Litton. She began in music singing in her dad’s band at the state fairs. At 14, she picked up playing the guitar and from then decided that music was all she wanted to do. “I just wanna give the gift back of music. I’ve loved so many bands, you know, and music has always been my life. Now that I get to play it all the time, I just feel like it’s gift and people should use those gifts.” Marie said. Originally growing up in Pueblo, Marie sharpened her talents as a musician with her family... Read More

Can Sleeping In Improve Your Health?

June 7th, 2018
Napping

New research suggests people who get too little sleep during the week can make up for it on the weekends. According to a study published in the Journal of Sleep Research, people who slept less than five hours each night throughout the week had an increased risk of early death compared to those who slept six to seven hours every night. People who get less than five hours during the week, but who catch up on some of that lost sleep on the weekend, do not have the same risk. These results suggest that sleep is not a risk factor for mortality if it is combined with a medium or long weekend sleep. Some... Read More

GET OUT THERE DENVER!

GET OUT THERE DENVER! The past few days I have randomly come across wonderful things happening in and around Denver.  I would never have experienced these random spectacles if I wasn’t just out and about.  So get out there and explore Denver!  There were lots of publicized events going on in Denver this past week…but I tend to go enjoy the less crowded, more accidental attractions…the REAL Denver! Get Wet! No it’s not an Italian piazza, but the relaxing courtyard at Union Station is reminiscent of a European public square.  Summertime here means pop-up fountains where children, adults,... Read More

Otto-matic

Adam Ottavino

If you struggle with the pronunciation of Rockies relief pitcher Adam Ottavino (/ah-tah-VEEN-oh/) it’s understandable. And my guess is that if you’re not a diehard Rockies fan you would struggle recognizing the man at all. In pitching for the Rockies, Ottavino’s job is to not be noticed.  As a middle-to-late-inning set-up man, Ottavino’s job is to hope that the flashy, high paid starters throw a solid six or seven innings, as closer Wade Davis (3yr/$52 million) begins to stretch and warm up in the bullpen to close it out. Ottavino’s job is to face just a few batters in the seventh or... Read More

Science Riot

Science Riot

This is my seventh year in Denver. In the Biblical tale of Creation, God took six days to build the world and then, seeing that it was good, on the seventh day He rested. Fitting, then, that this is my seventh year in Denver and I see that it is good, indeed. Yes, I may have just compared myself to the Almighty. Contemplating the Rockies makes one feel a bit divine, especially if one is currently at altitude and may or may not have taken a hit off one’s buddy’s recreational spliff, which is itself a Denver religious experience. After seven years, what would I say gives this rowdy, ethereal,... Read More

Our Thoughts

June 4th, 2018
Thoughts_Mindful Monday

The mind is the most powerful tool we can put to use within any endeavor we undertake. It holds the power to enhance and increase our capabilities or to exacerbate our limitations. Henry Ford very accurately broke it down when he said, “if you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” Mr. Ford was talking about our mindset. Our mindset provides the framework and sets the tone for how we approach everything we do. The things we think, the way we interpret our environment, and our ability to find success in challenging situations are all intimately linked to our mindset. Our mindset... Read More
