Continuing his exploration of spiritual and mythical characters from cultures across the world, Ravi Zupa has released the third print in his Tattoo series featuring Buraq from the Islamic tradition and a buddhist version of Mahakala. At the top, we see Mahakala—a fierce, chaotic form of Shiva (husband of Kali) who plays a significant role in Tibetan Buddhism. Like his wife, he is a symbol of time and thus is bound by no rules or structures of morality comprehensible by the human mind. “Facing Mahakala is the most alarming and frightening event in the life of any consciousness,” Zupa says... Just outside Larimer Square, sits Gallery 1261. Located at 1412 Wazee Street, it shares a space with K Contemporary and Abend Gallery, forming a colorful, cultural trifecta. Founder and artist Quang Ho envisioned a venue focused on creativity over marketability. Since 2004 they’ve been a place for artists to showcase their latest conceptions in a wide variety of mediums and styles. The gallery is spacious, with hardwood floors, redbrick walls, and plenty of large windows providing natural lighting. The pieces displayed are mostly paintings and small sculptures. They feature landscapes, portraits,... Read More
Tansey is a contemporary art gallery in the heart of LoDo. They offer exquisite pieces by well established artists, demonstrating highly refined techniques. While Tansey displays pieces from a variety of mediums, special emphasis is placed on sculptures. Crafted from glass, ceramic, wood, fiber, and many other mediums, each and every piece is a stunning example of imagination and craftsmanship. Originally located in Santa Fe, Tansey Contemporary is a welcome addition to Denver’s ever-growing art scene. Art in itself is beautiful and engaging, but the setting in which it is viewed is important... Read More
Valkarie Gallery is the brainchild of Valerie Savarie and Karrie York. It was initially imagined as a space to create and show the work of artists like themselves back in 2013. Over the last five years it’s grown into an artist owned and run collective that showcases emerging and established artists from a wide variety of backgrounds. The collective itself includes watercolor artists, jewelers, paper cut artists, book sculptors, graphic designers and photographers. Valkarie has two exhibition spaces, a main gallery and a resident gallery, as well as extra studio space. From December 12th thru... Read More
Leon Gallery is a fantastic place to be immersed in a sea of creativity. Located in a historic building off of 17th and Park Avenue, they host solo and group exhibitions from incredibly creative, innovative minds. Most galleries operate on commission, but Leon has chosen the non-profit approach. This allows them to incorporate a wider variety of artists with much more freedom of expression. For owners Eric Dallimore and Eric Nord, this is much more than just an exhibition space. It’s a staging area for community involvement and social change. They work to reduce stigmas around social issues,... Read More
In the spirit of journalistic integrity, I have to admit I have a slightly biased opinion about this week’s location. I already knew how rad one of the owners was prior to writing this. But don’t let my conflict of interest dissuade you from checking out Spectra Art Space on South Broadway, it deserves all the praise I can bestow. I stopped in for the first time a few days ago and saw my friend Sadie Young, the mastermind behind the operation. Spectra opened just last year at 1836 S Broadway and its already well established. The entrance to the gallery opens up into a large main room. There... Read More
