SYNC Gallery – Local Denver Art Gallery

November 17th, 2018
Helene Strebel's: "Window Fascade"

The Santa Fe Art District is always buzzing with excitement. The galleries open their doors and release  a cascade of color, culture, and expression into the streets of Denver. It’s the perfect atmosphere for local artists to experiment with new ideas and collaborate with one another. Sync Gallery, at 931 Santa Fe Drive, is a prime example of this. It began as an artist collective nearly a decade ago. Its members sought to create a space where they could be represented while maintaining their freedom of expression. The gallery is divided into two sections. Samples of work from all 20 of the... Read More

Aurora Brewery Spotlight: Making Headlines with Ursula Brewery

November 16th, 2018
Ursula Brewery

Tucked in an unsuspecting little suburb outside of Denver, sits a stellar brewery with a fabulous reputation, that’s only matched by its ability to roll with the punches. More about that later. Ursula Brewery has been a staple of the Fitzsimons neighborhood and it’s safe to say: it’s a favorite of many! Back in 2014 they opened their doors under the name Coda Brewing. With the unique mission of pairing beer and music. After the owners, Scott Procop and Luke Smith, parted ways in early 2016 – Ursula Brewery emerged! Both the guitar pick background and the Fender-esque font of their current... Read More

Standing Outside Your Own Shoes: On Non-Binary Identification And Your Favorite Restaurants

November 16th, 2018
mug with words sitting on a book on a table.

This article is to not serve as a promotion for any establishments possibly mentioned below, it is strictly an analysis of events and how they were handled. The individuals pertaining to the contents of this piece have asked they remain anonymous. It is no mystery that the area of Colorado Springs is getting older while the clientele that frequent the restaurants are getting younger; and with the younger generations there is a new degree of culture that should be addressed by the management and staff of the restaurants, and like establishments, in this city. One specific culture is non-binary... Read More

Bites with Blondie: Belly Up to a New Tradition this Thanksgiving

November 16th, 2018
Thanksgiving Dine-Out

Thanksgiving in my family is a big deal. Each year, my dad’s side of my family gathers together to eat good food and drink even better wine. It’s the day I look forward to most out of the year and the perfect kick off to the holiday season. We laugh, talk about what we are thankful for and end the night with a holiday cocktail and games. While it’s all fun and games, literally,  there is always a level of stress involved with creating the perfect meal and experience everyone will enjoy. Although this is our family tradition, some choose to not spend the hours cleaning the house and cooking... Read More

Faces of Denver – Darren Boyd

November 15th, 2018
Darren Boyd

Surviving as a neighborhood brewery in Denver is not an easy accomplishment these days stacked up against the saturated competition. Darren Boyd, one of the founders of Spangalang Brewery, believes that as the customer and competition has changed within the industry, the market and brewing process will too. Boyd has lived in Denver county for roughly 10 years after moving from Connecticut. He got involved in the brewing scene just as it was taking off in Denver and began working for Great Divide Brewing Co. After a couple years Boyd and his two other partners, Taylor Rees and Austin Wiley, all... Read More

How I Know

November 15th, 2018
snowboarding in idaho

The smell of his leather seats lingers in my nostrils, a scent more intoxicating than the taste of the second round of Tito’s and soda that he’d slid to me across the marble countertop just an hour before. My hands are jammed underneath my thighs while my wavy hair slides haphazardly across my cheeks. His face is glowing in the redness of the stoplight; words are patiently waiting to escape his lips. And, I want to freeze here, in the magic and the madness, before those syllables roll off of his tongue. My sister loves you. My roommate loves you. And, they don’t understand why I can’t tell... Read More

Hike Zapata Falls This Winter

November 15th, 2018
Zapata Falls

Just 3 miles south of the Entrance to the Great Sand Dunes National Park is an amazing waterfall that is not that well known and often only lightly trafficked. It is called Zapata Falls and while most tourists head there during the summer to escape the high temperatures at the great sand dunes, the real beauty is seeing this waterfall completely frozen.   There is no doubt that most visitors to the Great Sand Dunes see the sign for Zapata Falls on their way into the park, but the rocky entrance road and their (probable) itinerary of getting to the sand dunes likely wards off most visitors. Add... Read More

Is Eating Your Placenta Beneficial?

November 15th, 2018
Placenta pills

Over the past decade there has been growing interest in natural childbirth. As part of that debate many have questioned whether doctors should dispose of a placenta after birth. Many mammals consume their placenta — referred to as placentophagy — and there are proponents who argue that humans should also engage in this practice. What is the science of placentophagy? Is it safe to consume a placenta? Is it beneficial? The placenta is an organ shared by a pregnant mother and her growing fetus, functioning as the lungs, gastrointestinal system, liver, and kidneys of the developing child. Proponents... Read More

The Rebuild We Never Saw Coming

November 13th, 2018
The Denver Broncos rebuild

The word rebuild is a rarity in the Denver Bronco vernacular.  With more Super Bowls than losing seasons, the rebuilding process is saved for teams like the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, and San Francisco 49ers.  Teams that are rebuilding don’t go after top free agents, don’t draft Bradley Chubb over rookie quarterbacks, and they don’t have player contracts like Case Keenum, Emmanuel Sanders, or Von Miller.  John Elway doesn’t rebuild, he reloads.  A missed field goal here and a lucky break there, and Denver would be right in the thick of it, we rationalize.  Well, sorry Bronco... Read More

Thousand Year Soldiers – A Review on Overlord

November 11th, 2018
Overlord

“That was better than it had any right to be.” A friend of mine said that after we departed the theater, having just seen the new film Overlord. He was quite right, but you might be reasonably asking yourself, “What’s up with the smug condescension? Aren’t you supposed to give each movie its day in court and approach it as a cinematic tabula rasa?”    Yeah, I know. You’re supposed to, but let’s be honest here. We all have our biases, especially when it comes to movies. Some people want to immediately take a suicide pill when they see a trailer for the latest Marvel movie. Others... Read More
