Faces of Denver: Chris Geary of SYCDVK

January 11th, 2019

Denver’s eclectic group of artists playing electronic fusion and jazz music is what helps the city stand out in its music scene. One of these artists, Chris Geary, currently plays drums in the Denver-based band SYCDVK. The group’s sound pieces together multiple genre elements, forming an experimental psych-rock mixture that can be groovy and brass-oriented at some times and harder rock at others. SYCDVK just finished up a tour through the Midwest, but Geary is no stranger to traveling. He moved to Colorado from Long Beach, California roughly seven years ago after a friend told him that he was... Read More

Faces of Denver – Darren Boyd

Darren Boyd

Surviving as a neighborhood brewery in Denver is not an easy accomplishment these days stacked up against the saturated competition. Darren Boyd, one of the founders of Spangalang Brewery, believes that as the customer and competition has changed within the industry, the market and brewing process will too. Boyd has lived in Denver county for roughly 10 years after moving from Connecticut. He got involved in the brewing scene just as it was taking off in Denver and began working for Great Divide Brewing Co. After a couple years Boyd and his two other partners, Taylor Rees and Austin Wiley, all... Read More

Five Points Jazz Festival

May 12th, 2018

Annual festivals remind me of holidays without the cooking hassle. I get that magical childlike excitement not so different from long ago Christmas mornings. I remember the good times from prior festivals and all the food truck delicacies I consumed. I think of sunshine and the subsequent sun burns. I think of the friends I made in beer lines. I think of great music, dancing bodies, and smiles on every face. All of these wonderful things and more can be found at the upcoming Five Points Jazz Festival on May 19th. Since 2003 we’ve enjoyed this fantastic all ages celebration of jazz music and the... Read More

El Chapultepec

March 3rd, 2018

Everyone knows there are a million reasons to love Denver, and the music scene is high on all of our lists. Ample doesn’t quite cover it. We have Red Rocks of course, but we’re also blessed with a ton of local bars that host live bands every night of the week. Not to mention DIY venues. Whatever your cup of tea is, you’ll find it here. Personally, I’ve always had a soft spot for old bars. They acquire a unique sense of character that only gets better with age. El Chapultepec is about as old as Denver bars get. For nearly a century it has stood on the corner of 20th and Market, serving... Read More

Faces of Denver – Random Temple!

June 26th, 2017

Meet Random, (yes, that is his actual name) a multi-skilled Denver musician with a nice set of golden locks that makes others jealous. Random Temple, which has to be one of the most intriguing names ever, has lived in Denver for 5 years. He was born in Eugene, Oregon under, according to him, parents that were hippie-esque and avid followers of the Grateful Dead. He spent a chunk of his childhood going to Grateful Dead concerts with his parents; probably being credited as the beginning of his exposure to the music world. Even though he was born in Eugene, he spent a good portion of his life growing... Read More
