She Hit a Stick

December 31st, 2017

If you’re a screenwriter in Hollywood, a successful one, after a while you start to get the itch to direct your own stuff. Sometimes it works out. Look at Christopher McQuarrie. Other times it doesn’t. Look at Dan Aykroyd. Aaron Sorkin has likely felt the same way, and he’s seized his opportunity with his latest film Molly’s Game. A well-respected writer and producer for decades, he’s made a career out of being clever. Understand, there’s nothing wrong with that. Sorkin’s career exploded by writing the screenplays for films like A Few Good Men and Charlie Wilson’s War, along with... Read More

Soup IS Good Food

December 28th, 2017

Researchers think Tom Yum Gung, a zesty Thai soup, might have cancer-fighting ingredients as well as good taste. Also called hot and sour soup, Tom Yum Gung is a shrimp soup with herbal ingredients like coriander, lemon grass, lime leaves and even galangal roots, a pungent root similar to ginger. A recent joint study by Thailand’s Kasetsart University and Japan’s Kyoto and Kinki Universities has found that the ingredients in Tom Yum Gung soup are 100 times more effective in inhibiting cancerous tumor growth than other foods. Soup has long been thought to have health enhancing properties.... Read More

The Secret Ingredient for the Best Bagel Shop in Denver

December 27th, 2017

There is a real crisis going on west of the East Coast. Bagels…or the lack thereof. Let’s be honest, there really aren’t many places in the U.S. that are outside of New York and New Jersey that can do bagels right. They just aren’t the same anywhere else. And why is that? Some say it’s the ingredients or the way the bagel is made, which is accurate to some degree, but a lot of it is down to the water! For the more science minded people, there are certain minerals in the water in the New York region that react with the gluten to give the bagels a more dense and gooey... Read More

Do We Really Want Kirk Cousins?

December 26th, 2017

Bronco Nation, I understand how you feel.  We had Peyton Manning and a Super Bowl parade just a few years ago and now we’re 5-10.  We missed on Paxton Lynch, Trevor Siemian and Brock Osweiler are third-stringers at best, and we’re hurting. The problem is that when emotions get involved decision making can suffer.  Human nature tends to look for that quick fix, that immediate gratification, that something to ease the pain.  We cheat on our diet only to regret it the next day, drink too much only to regret it the next morning, and even covet mediocre free-agent quarterbacks dreaming of fairytale... Read More

Monstrous Romance

December 24th, 2017

Like all great romances, it began with a connection. He was raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, in an enthusiastically Catholic household. Was it the fixation on blood, death, and rebirth that steered his imagination in a certain direction? Perhaps, but who can say for sure? The only thing we do know is, starting from a very young age, Guillermo del Toro loved monsters. Looking at his filmography, it’s not hard to believe. Every film he’s made, from the vampire tale Cronos to the lush Pan’s Labyrinth to the mechs versus kaiju Pacific Rim, there’s been a focus of some kind on creatures. However,... Read More

What About Your Diet?

December 21st, 2017

There is no perfect diet for everyone, in spite of what you might have heard.  It seems the human body can adapt to almost any diet and survive, even thrive!  Consider the diet of the Inuit, the people indigenous to polar locations such as Siberia, Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. Theirs is a mostly meat diet, and yet they are a hardy population who consume few to no vegetables in their diet. In the US, experts recommend a diet largely focused on healthy grains, fruits and vegetables.  Most Americans don’t get the recommended 5 servings per day, and even fewer eat the 5-9 servings that is considered... Read More
