Faces of Denver – Anthony Lopiccolo

June 26th, 2021

Denver has become a one of most recognized craft beer cities in the United States. Anthony Lopiccolo is working to push the boundaries of that title through the experimentation he does with food and sour beers at Goed Zuur. He and John Fayman opened Goed Zuur about a year ago after carefully crafting the idea for a restaurant that was unlike any beer bar Denver has seen before. Originally, Anthony began cooking at the age of eleven when his parents opened up a pizzeria in Detroit. His family always made their own prosciutto and signature dishes, which led him to develop a respect for the old-world... Read More

Postcard Foods

July 8th, 2020

My New Year’s Resolution for 2019 was “Stick to a Meal-Planning Regimen.” If you Google this idea, you get all the kitchen-blogger schtick about how preparing meals in advance saves you time and money, helps you lose weight, yadda yadda yadda. These things are both completely true and exceptionally boring. I wasn’t trying to save time or lose weight. I was going through a deeply difficult period and I was struggling to do things as basic as feed myself. I would make meals ahead of time and then I would require myself to actually sit down to eat them and say the out loud the words, “Someone... Read More

3 Great Places to Eat in Capitol Hill Denver

August 20th, 2019

Ah, Denver. The city is so fun and diverse with many different neighborhoods, each with their own spunk. Capitol Hill is a well-known neighborhood for its charm, tree-lined streets, and gritty history. Not only that, but they have a great selection of restaurants and bars at affordable prices! 1. LowDown Brewery This is one of my favorite places in the area! The vibe is very chill and low-key, and the food is to die for. They have amazing appetizers (their homemade beer cheese with bread and apple to dip is my personal fav) and a great selection of sandwiches and pizza. The service is friendly,... Read More

Three Tips to Spring Clean Your Diet

March 14th, 2019

The spring equinox (also called the March equinox or vernal equinox) falls on Wednesday, March 20, 2019, at 5:58 P.M. EST. This event marks the astronomical first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.  Fun fact: the word equinox comes from the Latin meaning “equal night,” referring to the fact that the length of the day and night are nearly equal in most parts of the world. Since spring is almost here for most of us, it’s a great time to think about ways to spruce up our eating habits a bit.  Here are three ways to refine your diet this spring. Make small edits to your diet.  We all... Read More

Facts About Food That Can Influence Your Diet

January 30th, 2019

Did you know that a green (unripe) banana confers its own unique health benefits? Green bananas are a good source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals, and contain resistant starch which cannot be broken down by enzymes in your digestive system and, therefore, acts more like fiber. Including foods high in resistant starch in your diet may reduce your risk of diabetes and heart disease by aiding in blood sugar control and lowering blood cholesterol levels. Bananas have higher levels of antioxidants as they ripen. Fully ripened bananas produce a substance called Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF). TNF regulates... Read More

Let Me Eat Cake!

Genna Rae's

A while ago, I indulged myself in a bit of distance from writing about cool things to do in Denver and wrote about things to eat the morning after. I beg your indulgence as I continue this trend of writing-about-things-I-want-to-eat-when-I-bike-home-from-venues-in-the-wee-hours, which is exactly how I discovered Genna Rae’s Wings & Mo. After eating there, my only wish for improvement in the experience is that they were open at 2am, when I could nosh on some deep-fried foods on my way home and not have to drag myself back out again in the glaring light of day. I live in the Clayton neighborhood... Read More

Thanksgiving is next week and there are several of us who will be shopping for foods this weekend, and all next week, leading up to the big day! For some, hemp foods can be new to cook with, and there isn’t a lot of direction for how to add hemp to your Thanksgiving, until now! Hemp foods are gaining popularity, and becoming much easier to find in stores. Hempsgiving was recently held in Denver, where every item on the menu featured some sort of hemp. Hello and Welcome – Meet Cailean: A Local to Take You Behind the Scenes of Restaurants Across the State

November 9th, 2018

Let’s paint a picture; when we sit and think about the culinary industry it is almost natural to imagine a man with a thick British accent screaming at the cooks about everything they are doing wrong, tearing everyone down piece by piece. Is that what really happens though? In some cases, yes, but not in every single kitchen around the world, let alone just here in Colorado. Most of the Chefs I have met here in Colorado are, honestly, downright mellow; sure, it is natural to have a bad day here and there where you lash out at everyone and everything around you, but it’s not a constant occurrence.... Read More

3 Reasons to Read Food Labels

September 20th, 2018
precessed foods_how to read food labels

Recently, I had dinner at my favorite Mexican restaurant.  Usually I get a meal and don’t have room for the sopapilla that comes with it, but this time I took the sopapilla home to eat later. When I was ready to eat it, I was surprised to see that the “honey” for the sopapilla was not honey at all. It was fake honey made with corn syrup. I happened to have some locally source honey at home and used that instead of the faux honey. This is just one of the reasons it’s important to read labels. If you’re trying to change your life by eating fewer processed foods, less sugar, or any number... Read More
