Cutting Room Floor

October 22nd, 2019

I’ve mentioned in previous columns that “immersive theater” is having a moment. At the Aurora Fox Arts Center, it’s having an orgasm. Or perhaps a petit mal seizure. Or maybe both. Petit mal, petit mort…whatever; I walked into Control Group Productions’ staging of Cutting Room Floor and walked out 90 minutes later, not quite sure how that time-loss had happened, but desperately hoping to make it happen again. The idea is this: the historic Fox Theater, founded in a Quonset hut in 1946 and thriving for decades as a movie house, was gutted by a fire in the early 80s, by which time it... Read More

Remember the Rules

October 20th, 2019

If you went back in time and told the younger version of myself that a) there would be a gigantically popular TV series about the zombie apocalypse and b) that I would have tapped out on it after the third season, Younger Me would have immediately called 911 and had you arrested with extreme prejudice. Consider that The Walking Dead began as an independent comic book. Now, it’s getting started on its 10th season, has one current and one upcoming spinoff series, and there’s talk about releasing three connected theatrical films. To paraphrase a former Vice President, The Walking Dead is a big... Read More

October 20th, 2019

2019 has been a wonderful time for artist and new resident of Denver, Gay Germain for many reasons, most importantly living near family and also finding an art studio to work in and FooLPRoof Contemporary Art Gallery to exhibit her work, both in the Rino Art District of Denver. Raised in the northeast, Germain was encouraged by her parents to pursue a “practical” career in business commencing in Airline Management and culminating in the executive recruiting industry. Simultaneously, she studied sculpture with internationally renowned sculptor Leonda Finke for many years. Her interest to expand... Read More

October 19th, 2019

With a string of illnesses and vaping related deaths in the last few months, the public has been turning a harsh eye towards all vaping products, including marijuana products. Several vaping related illnesses have been seen in Colorado, and nearly all of the patients were using a combination of tobacco and marijuana products. The source of the illness is still unknown, but many have pointed towards black market vaping products. In an effort to quell some of the destruction of vaping related illnesses, particularly in teens and young adults, many cities have taken it upon themselves to remove flavored... Read More

5 Facts About the Flu Shot Before Flu Season

October 17th, 2019

There’s a whole host of misinformation regarding the flu shot, and with this season set to be a particularly nasty year, it’s important to dispel any myths. 1. The flu season generally runs from late October to May. You will need a new flu shot for every flu season as the virus changes between seasons 2. Flu vaccines can fight multiple strains of the flu, and will help lessen symptoms if you do get the flu 3. The flu vaccine protects 40-60% of people on average every year. Boulder Man Can’t Wait for Winter, Makes His Own Snow to Snowboard

October 14th, 2019

Even though it snowed in Boulder last week, a local man was unable to wait for winter to really come to start snowboarding. So, he took matters into his own hands. Charles Destefano made his own snow machine for a ramp in his backyard so he can take up snowboarding now instead of waiting for November or December for more snow. “There’s a brass ball valve and then there’s a bunch of spouts that are gonna lead to a sprinkler head. It shoots really, really fine water so when it hits the air, nature does all the rest,” explained Destafano. “Yes [I’m] obsessed, it’s... Read More

Battle of Wills

October 13th, 2019

Some movies only require a script, actors, and a camera. A good and tragically underseen example of this is 2018’s The Standoff at Sparrow Creek, a thriller following an ex-cop investigating a police funeral and his suspicion that the shooter belongs to the same militia he does. It’s a great film that had an estimated budget of $450,000. Costs were kept low by keeping the locations modest. It also helped that the vast majority of scenes were essentially guys talking to each other in rooms. It’s a great film due to smart writing, efficient direction, and strong acting. Does the fact that... Read More
