Art of the State

March 23rd, 2019

The Art of the State is an expansive series covering as much of the Colorado art scene as possible. This isn’t a normal exhibition; it’s a full scale immersion. Open to all Colorado artists and every type of media, this is an incredibly diverse event that attracts hundreds of artists. It takes place at the spacious Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities. Home to three separate galleries and over 10,000 square feet of exhibition space, the Arvada Center is one of the few venues in the Denver area large enough for a collection of this magnitude. This event always draws some big names... Read More

Low Gluten or No Gluten?

March 21st, 2019

Today, about three million Americans are gluten free, 72 per cent of whom are classified as PWAGs: people without celiac disease avoiding gluten. Aside from celiac disease, there are other conditions impacted by gluten in the diet–rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and other autoimmune disorders. Gluten is a mixture of two different proteins present in cereal grains, especially wheat, rye, and barley. For those with sensitivities, gluten causes inflammation and damage in the intestinal tracts and other parts of the body. One in 133 people have celiac disease, an autoimmune disease... Read More

Rainbow Militia at Invisible City

March 19th, 2019

By my current estimate*, roughly 29% of social media is devoted to decrying why social media is so terrible for us. They’re not wrong. We spend a shocking amount of time comparing other people’s carefully-curated presentations of their mundane lives to our own, known-to-be-dreary existences. People who I know are boring as dirt in real life look like rock stars online. I am not immune to this: my phone tells me that I spend upwards of two hours a day staring at it, which is far more than I have ever spent staring at any lover I have ever had. Make of that fact what you will. I bring this up... Read More

No Date for the Dance

March 19th, 2019

Selection Sunday has come and gone, and the Colorado Buffaloes failed to earn an invite to the 2019 NCAA Basketball Championships.  Proponents argue that the Pac-12 was immensely weak this year, the Buffs strength of schedule was poor, and the team lacked quality wins.  Compound that with a bad loss to Washington State and a limited number of spots, and the snub was more than expected. But I have seven, completely unbiased reasons why the NCAA Selection Committee should have had the Buffs dancing in March. 21 Wins – Colorado finished 21-12. While you can downplay the achievement with a schedule... Read More

Wannabe

March 17th, 2019

Do you know what drives me absolutely batty? When a movie doesn’t know what it wants to be. You’d think that would be reasonably easy to work out, right? Perhaps not, but let’s perform a thought experiment from a couple of angles. Imagine you’re a screenwriter. A major studio hires you to pen the latest installment of their box-office dominating franchise. To do that, you need to figure out genre and tone. With genre, are you making a superhero movie? An action flick? A comedy? Science fiction? If you want to blend the genres, great. The Cabin in the Woods is ultimately a horror movie that... Read More

The Mile High 4.20K Comes to Denver on 4/20!

March 16th, 2019

A mile higher. A mile healthier. That’s the slogan for the first ever 4.20K walk/run coming to the mile-high city on 4/20/2019. Denver is well known for having an overwhelming number of events catering to the cannabis lifestyle, and now there’s one specifically for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and anyone looking to promote the health and wellness benefits of this remarkable plant. The event is designed to “raise awareness and promote a healthy lifestyle with cannabis for medicinal purposes; physically, mentally, and psychologically. Finding different ways to give back to the community without... Read More

GEORGIA

March 16th, 2019

I love this city. The music, the art, the scenery, the people; it’s all top notch. One of the greatest things about Denver is the DIY community. It takes a special kind of person to pour their heart and soul, not to mention blood, sweat, and tears, into a project to benefit others. It takes a special kind of community to nurture these projects and help them thrive. Denver is an ideal in both of these aspects. We’ve had more than our fair share of legendary underground music venues, but now we have a slightly different DIY gem. The soon-to-be-all-the-rage garage gallery, GEORGIA. You... Read More

Three Tips to Spring Clean Your Diet

March 14th, 2019

The spring equinox (also called the March equinox or vernal equinox) falls on Wednesday, March 20, 2019, at 5:58 P.M. EST. This event marks the astronomical first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.  Fun fact: the word equinox comes from the Latin meaning “equal night,” referring to the fact that the length of the day and night are nearly equal in most parts of the world. Since spring is almost here for most of us, it’s a great time to think about ways to spruce up our eating habits a bit.  Here are three ways to refine your diet this spring. Make small edits to your diet.  We all... Read More

Winter Warms Up At Mile High Beer Fest

March 12th, 2019

The Mile-High City is home to a wide variety of festivals, ranging from The Westword Music Showcase to the International Lidar Mapping Forum (ILMF for those in the aerial survey world) and everything in between. So naturally, there are a ton of beer-centric festivals that make their way to or call our wonderful city home. This past weekend, even the single-digit temperatures couldn’t stop the band from playing or the beer from flowing at Mile High Beer Fest. So, camera in hand and winter coat donned, I made my way to Number 38 in RiNo to check out just what Mile-High Beer Fest was all about! So... Read More

Mock Draft – Broncos Look Linebacker

March 12th, 2019

With the NFL Combine in the books, the Denver Broncos and the rest of the league will wait to see what happens in free agency before putting together their draft boards.  It looks as if Joe Flacco will be a Bronco, Case Keenum a Redskin, Nick Foles a Jaguar, and Kyler Murray is rumored to join Kliff Kingsbury as the first pick in Arizona. But I don’t see it that way.  Here’s my mock draft 1.0. Oakland Raiders (via trade with Arizona) – Nick Bosa (Edge/Ohio State). The Cardinals were bluffing about their intention of drafting Kyler Murray after trading up to select quarterback Josh Rosen... Read More
